What AZW3 is

AZW3 is Amazon’s KF8 format. Inside, a book is split into many linked pieces (a skeleton of each page, text fragments that fit into it, a table of contents and style resources) packed into one database file. A converter has to put those pieces back together exactly. A tool that is only approximately right produces books with missing chapters or broken links, so this site does not ship an AZW3 converter until it can be tested against real files.

Steps with free desktop software

Check that the file has no DRM. If the book was bought from a shop and opens only in the shop’s app or on your Kindle, it very likely has DRM and cannot be converted legitimately.
Install Calibre. Calibre is free and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
Add the book. Use “Add books” and choose the .azw3 file.
Convert it. Select the book, choose “Convert books”, set the output format to EPUB and start.
Copy the EPUB. Use “Open containing folder” on the EPUB format and copy the file to your reader.

What you can do on this site meanwhile

If the file is an older .azw3 or .azw that also contains a MOBI version of the book, the MOBI to EPUB converter may read it. It tells you plainly if the file is KF8 only.

DRM and AZW3

Most AZW3 files from a shop carry DRM. This site does not remove DRM and will refuse such files if a converter appears here. Convert only files you own or have the right to convert.

How do I convert AZW3 to EPUB?

Can I convert AZW3 to EPUB with DRM?

Not here. We do not remove DRM. A DRM-protected AZW3 can only be read in the app or device it was bought for, unless the seller offers another format.

What is the difference between AZW3 and MOBI?

Both are Amazon formats. MOBI is the older one with simple HTML. AZW3 (KF8) supports more styling and is built from several linked parts. EPUB is the open format both can be turned into.

Is there a free online AZW3 to EPUB converter?

Several sites upload your file to a server. This site does not upload anything, which is also why an AZW3 converter is taking longer: it has to be written to run in your browser and be tested first.

Why is the converter not ready?

AZW3 is a container of linked parts, and a mistake in putting them back together gives a broken book. We would rather say that than ship something that fails quietly.
