MOBI to EPUB Converter

Drop a DRM-free .mobi file and download an EPUB 3 with chapters, cover and pictures. It runs in your browser, so there is no upload and nothing to install.

How the MOBI is converted

  1. Choose the MOBI file. Drop a .mobi file on the box. A .prc file from the same format family also works.
  2. Pick the reader preset. It sets how large the images are and how wide the page margins are. Leave title and author empty to keep the book’s own.
  3. Convert. The page decompresses the book, splits it into chapters at its page breaks and headings, and writes the EPUB.
  4. Download and copy. Put the EPUB on your reader, or send it with the reader’s email service.

A MOBI file is a database of records: a header, the book text as compressed HTML, and the images. The converter reads the header and the metadata block for the title, author and cover, decompresses the text (the usual PalmDOC compression), cleans the HTML into valid XHTML, and writes each chapter as its own file with a table of contents.

What is kept

  • Chapters. The book is split where the original has page breaks, or at headings when it has none. Chapter titles come from the headings.
  • Images and cover. Pictures are decoded, scaled to the preset and placed where they were. The cover named in the metadata becomes the EPUB cover.
  • Links inside the book. Links that point to a position in the text are rewritten to point into the right chapter file.
  • Metadata. Title, author, publisher, description and language.

What is refused or not supported

  • DRM. A MOBI with DRM is refused with no output. This site does not remove DRM.
  • HUFF/CDIC compression. A few older books use this scheme. The converter says so and stops.
  • KF8-only files. A modern .azw3 file is a different inner format; see the AZW3 to EPUB page.
  • Fixed-layout and comic books are not rebuilt.

MOBI and EPUB: why convert

MOBI was Amazon’s early e-book format. EPUB is the open format that Kobo, Apple Books and most reading apps use, and Amazon now takes EPUB through Send to Kindle. An EPUB 3 keeps working on more devices, and its table of contents is a proper navigation file instead of a link list in the text.

Questions people ask

How do I convert MOBI to EPUB without Calibre?
Use this page. Drop the DRM-free .mobi file, wait a moment, and download the EPUB. Everything happens in your browser. Calibre does the same job as a desktop program; here there is nothing to install.
Can I convert a MOBI with DRM to EPUB?
No. DRM-protected books are refused and this site does not remove DRM. If you bought a book, check whether the shop also sells or lets you download a DRM-free version.
Does the EPUB keep chapters and images?
Yes. Chapters follow the book’s page breaks and headings, and images are kept in place at the size the preset allows. If a book has neither page breaks nor headings, it ends up as a single section.
Why is my converted book one long chapter?
The original has no page breaks or headings that the converter can use, so there is nothing to split on. The text is all there; the table of contents just has one entry.
Is my MOBI file uploaded?
No. The file is read in your browser tab and the EPUB is built there. Only anonymous counts, such as “a MOBI was converted”, reach the site.
Can I read the EPUB on a Kindle?
Send it with Amazon’s Send to Kindle, which converts EPUB for the device. Kobo and most apps open EPUB directly.
