Get it on your reader
- USB. Connect the reader, open its storage and copy the .epub file into its books folder.
- Email or app. Many readers have a send-to-device email address or app that accepts EPUB. Use your reader maker’s help page for the address.
- DRM-free only. Small readers and many apps cannot open protected books. This file has no protection added.
- Next.Make it smaller, pull out the text, convert a MOBI, or read the notes for common readers.
What the text file looks like
- Choose the EPUB. DRM-protected books are refused.
- Choose line wrapping. Leave it off for one line per paragraph, or wrap at 72 or 80 characters.
- Convert. The text appears below as a preview.
- Download the .txt. The file is UTF-8 without a byte order mark.
The book title and author come first. Chapters follow in the order the book lists them, each starting with its heading (or its table-of-contents title when the chapter has no heading). Paragraphs are separated by a blank line, list items start with a dash, and line breaks inside a paragraph are kept. Images, covers and styling are left out.
When it helps
- Reading on a device that has no EPUB support.
- Counting words or searching a book with a text tool.
- Feeding a text-to-speech program.
- Moving the text into a word processor.
Limits
Tables become tab-separated rows, which is rarely pretty. Fixed-layout and comic EPUBs hold pictures, not text, so the result is empty. DRM-protected EPUBs are refused: this site does not remove DRM.
Questions people ask
How do I convert an EPUB to TXT?
Drop the EPUB on this page and download the text file. The chapters come out in reading order with their headings.
Can I convert an EPUB with DRM to text?

Why is some text missing?

UTF-8 with no byte order mark. Most editors open it directly.

No, it is read in your browser tab.
