Word (DOCX) to EPUB Converter

Drop a .docx file and download an EPUB. Heading 1 starts a new chapter, pictures and basic formatting are kept, and the contents list is built for you.

What the converter reads

  1. Prepare headings in Word. Use the Heading 1 style for chapter titles. The converter splits on it.
  2. Choose the .docx file. Old .doc files are not supported; save as .docx first.
  3. Pick a preset. It sets image size and page margins in the EPUB.
  4. Convert and download. Copy the EPUB to your reader or send it with the reader’s email service.

The document is read by the open-source mammoth library, which turns Word’s paragraph styles into clean HTML instead of copying Word’s formatting. That HTML is then split into chapters, pictures are shrunk to the preset, and an EPUB 3 is written.

Headings, chapters and the contents list

Each Heading 1 starts a chapter and becomes its entry in the table of contents. Heading 2 and below stay inside the chapter. If the document has no Heading 1, Heading 2 is used instead. Text before the first heading goes in a first chapter named after the document title. A paragraph in the Title style is treated as the book title.

What is kept and what is dropped

  • Kept: bold, italic, underline, superscript and subscript, bulleted and numbered lists, tables, hyperlinks, footnotes as text, pictures with their alt text.
  • Dropped: page headers and footers, page numbers, text boxes and shapes, comments, tracked-change marks, fonts and exact spacing.

Look at the result in your reader: EPUB text flows, so a page in Word does not map to a page in the EPUB.

Questions people ask

How do I convert Word to EPUB for Kindle?
Convert the .docx here, then send the EPUB to your Kindle with Amazon’s Send to Kindle. Use Heading 1 for chapter titles first so the table of contents comes out right.
Does it keep images and formatting?
Pictures, bold, italic, lists, tables and links are kept. Exact fonts, spacing, headers and footers are not; an EPUB reflows, so those do not apply.
Why is my whole document one chapter?
It has no Heading 1 or Heading 2 paragraphs. Apply a Heading style to the chapter titles in Word and convert again.
Does it work with .doc files?
No. Open the file in Word or a compatible program and save it as .docx first.
Is the document uploaded?
No. It is read in your browser tab.
